I love some of the ideas Backyard Diva shares on Facebook.Lots of 'up cycling' of things.

Particularly liked a gorgeous (painted red) decked area with 2 'walls' (fences) a bit like a partial outdoor room, made from pallets. It was stunning and cheap. The 'walls' had small plants hung almost like pictures in some kind of small pot, there were herbs or other plants set in rows between the pallet planks to the front on one side, looking gorgeous and forming perfect rows as you would for veg etc,an old metal drum sprayed and used as a table etc.

I love seeing cheap ways to add the normally more expensive, extras people want in their gardens.

Tempted to try something like it when I move but will have to see, have a few ideas :)

Oh wow I've just had a quick look at her page-I love the herb labels which look like they're made out of old lids (cans or jars maybe)-too much for every plant but very cute indeed for herbs. Hmmmm!

You can get brilliant cuttings from Supermarket cut flowers. Carnations and Sweet Williams are especially easy. On a normal stem there are side shoots. Cut them from the main stem, remove the lower leaves and dip the end in root hormone, or just a cup of clean water. Within a couple of weeks they will root and can be planted out.

I recently brought from the reduced flowers a spray of carnations for 50p as the flowers were shrivelled. I've managed to root 10 plants from the side shoots :)

yes, but you cant feed yourself off it for a year, can you?

the key is staple crops, in other words the carbs

can you in all honesty grow enough spuds or wheat or sorgum or maize or barley or rice to last a year?

I wouldn't know because I've only had my lottie since late January :p

However, although I won't be growing rice / maize / wheat / barley, I will be growing beans for drying and potatoes (which we don't eat a lot of anyway)....so I will let you know in 12 months time :D
