Rolled oats - spleeeurgh!

I have always been meaning to ask what is the difference between rolled oats and any other kind and never got round to it. I bought some the other day and made porridge with them this morning - oooh, they are peculiar.
Do you think they are more suited to baking eg flapjacks, or am I just fussy?
I will need to use these up now but I dont like them as porridge.

I use Tesco Value oats for porridge, flapjacks and muffins. I've always assumed they were rolled oats, they look rolled to me
Makes great porridge

Hi, Larmy! I use rolled oats, too, for porridge, flapjack, crumble, cakes.
Wikipedia enty is here - interesting read.
Do you usually use oatmeal?

I only use them for flapjacks. I use the value ones for porridge. They have a smoother texture that my toddler prefers.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

Me three! I use tesco organic oats (look like the value ones) for porridge & baking, I always thought these were rolled oats & the ready-brek powder type ones were oatmeal? !Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

I'm a recent convert to proper porridge for breakfast. Did you make it on milk or just water? I started on half and half. The grain size makes a difference to cooking times as does your taste in viscosity - I like mine "so chumpy, y' ken carrve it" as the ad goes. With Taste the Difference oats it takes up to 40 minutes in my double boiler (guaranteed no sticking to the pan) but Sainsburys Organic oats seem much smaller and therefore cook faster/require less liquid.
Rolled oats are a bit like pasta in that you should always buy the best that you can afford (especially if you are just starting to eat porridge again). If you think reality makes sense, you're just not paying attention!0 -
And i thought ready brek and oatmeal were 2 completely different things.0

They are "Whole Rolled Oats" from Sainsburys Taste the Difference - I just looked. It says they are gently milled to retain a sweet nutty texture. Well like Gingham says I prefer the smoother texture. The flakes stay individual not like the other kind which mushes up (hope that makes sense).Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

As you can see by previous post these are the ones I bought and I cooked them for approx. 7 minutes in microwave - maybe thats why they were still really chunky?Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01
