Thank you all with advice re: mince. I buy the more expensive leaner sm mince already but was curious. I bulk mine out with carrot and lentils and other bits too. My niece asked to have my spag Bol when she's next round as she loves it. There again she's not a meat fan so that maybe why. Although she doesn't know that
Will have to check d.r for meat. A friend earlier also mentioned them. I would have to run down my freezer first I think. Weird what ideas I come up from my sick bed lol. Got meal plan done and monthly (July) shop for £76 coming Fridayvery food focused.
Hope you have a good hols Craigy:j Baby boy arrived 22nd August 2012 :j

Over on the Second Purse thread we have had a referral thing going for DR if you are interested, the person referring gets a freebie.
I only order when there is an offer and free delivery (as taught by the lovely Mothership) but the DR mince for example, comes frozen in a block and close wrapped, so takes up a lot less space in the freezer than most SM packs which are in trays.
You can also order small amounts, for example I have 16 x lamb burgers (4 packs of 4) coming next month, 1/2 price and free P&P so you dont need to go mad and place a huge order if you dont want to.

And hope you are feeling better today Little Miss!0 -
Hi everyone,
I've been following on here for a little while as at the beginning of this month I worked out on average my OH and I spend £500 a month on groceries (that does include sundries like toiletries and cleaning products) for just the two of us! That seems a lot compared to what those of you with families spend, so there must be room to get it down and they maybe we could use the savings for a treat?
On my days off this week, Thursday I want to sit down and work out what I buy a month. From there I can figure out the cheapest place to buy it.
Meal planning, I think, will be key. Including lunch boxes.
All tips will be picked up avidly. I want to save minimum of £20 first month (seems realistic) and then see how much I can squeeze out of it from there.
Got myself a binder and pad with plastic wallets for lists, plans and coupons, couple that with the iPad for Internet research and with a bit if hard work I figure I will be unstoppable!!!
Well done everyone else on all your great savings and I hope to be up there with you soon....Grocery Challenge Target £400!!

I am looking to save money on my food bill, (aren't we all) and I would like some advice.
There are 3 of us me DH and elderly mother, me and DH are pretty much sorted but elderly mother drives me nuts regarding food.
She has a very limited range of things that she likes and she prefers the cheap manufactured c**p from the supermarket to homemade which she will just move around the plate for half and hour then leave. but she always has room for pudding if there is one. She rarely eats veg (including salad) except potatoes and will not eat anything considered foreign (pasta, rice, noodles etc) or spicy (chilli, curry, etc).
I am hoping to create a meal plan for her with approx 2-3 weeks meals on and just pick from it on a daily basis.
any ideas would be greatly appreciated before I hurt my head banging it on the wall.:D
Here are some of the things i already do
Small tin of spag bol with a jacket potato (dont consider this pasta)
roast dinner
fish and chips
egg and chips
egg and bacon with tomatoes and black pudding
soup (will only eat tomato soup)
individual cheese and onion quiche with tiny bit of salad and jacket.
Could I make a large quiche and portion it up? no one else in the house eats it.
meat pie and potatoes
cottage/shepherds pie
fish pie (usually picks out the fish)
boiled/poached eggs on toast
Regards

Is your DM my MIL :rotfl:? In addition, my MIL also doesn't have many teeth so can't chew so another factor but she doesn't live with us - just has 2 meals a week here. She will/can eat the following things which may help:
Fishcakes (shop-bought obviously :rotfl:)
Jacket Potato with tinned salmon
'Smiley Faces potatoes' which could be useful to bung in oven for her to eat with something easy while you have something healthy. She eats hers with corned beef.
Mash is very popular (as long as I don't mash carrots or anything else into it)
Tinned mackerel in tomato sauce
Chicken nuggets
HTH a bit. I have to say she makes my children seem like the easiest people in the world to feed.

I'd like to get this down but wondered if it's doable as my hubby works shifts and I work fulltime so don't have time to trawl supermarkets for bargains. I guess that batch cooking might be my friend? My kids are also a bit fussy, frankly!
Any helpful tips would be much appreciated. Oh, and i'm a huge lardy!!!!! (:o) and need to lose weight. Thinking of WW.
thanks!
Welcome to this challenge! I've managed to save about £20 per week on my budget since I joined this challenge by reading everyone's great tips so good luck :j.little_miss_moneysaver wrote: »Afternoon all,

Cleggie if they look and smell ok I'd eat them!
Ok my question....do you guys use value/cheap mince or buy the leaner mince? My mum always said that buying cheap mince is false economy, but looking at some price differences I wonder if there's really much difference once the mince is cooked?
Just trying to do my monthly shop ready for Friday at MR S. got a voucher £10 off £50 as a new online customer. It's taking forever on there though! But I'm doing well at sticking to my list so far
I use the lean mince as it doesn't have as much gristle and rubbish in it,as well as being less fatty. I try to buy it on special offer when I can or YS.Pay debt in 2012 #278 £2347/£5364
