There was no one thing that happened....the whole subject just became the fave topic of a media feeding frenzy, especially after a few societies converted and lots of people got lots of free money. The societies were inundated with people opening accounts with £100 and that's it. This is obviously not profitable for them so they changed the T&C's to counteract the stampede and ensure only genuine new customers joined.
