Possible fraud on my credit card?

I've had a few missed calls - 0845 numbers on my mobile this week. Today I answered one of them, an automated call claiming to be from my credit card advising me to ring an 0845 number re: possible fraudulent activity on my card. I didn't do this, but rang the number on the back of my card instead (about an hour later from my home phone as I was out shopping). Apparently, at the same time I answered the 0845 number, a £1 payment went through on my credit card to Fast Hosts - a company I have had no dealings with (googling reveals an internet hosting business). This appears to have been the only fraudulent activity - strange that it was exactly the same time as my phone call? Is this coincidence?
Nationwide seemed confused as to whether they'd made the automated call or not(!), and certainly they hadn't blocked the card as I'd subsequently been able to make a purchase after receiving the call.
I've now cancelled my card, but has anyone a clue as to what could have happened? Was it just coincidence?

This page has some info, including an 0845 number and also a geographical number. Any help? Are you for real? - Glass Half Empty??

Its a different phone number on that page you quote, but if I google it, it comes up with Nationwide (plus a slight question mark over whether its genuine). The number was 08453512255 today (in fact, different from the other days, and googling those suggest my mobile phone provider). But maybe the automated message was automatically triggered by the £1? If so, that is quick work! Would it work that quickly?
ETA the example phone message on the Nationwide website also has some differences from what I heard.0
