On-Line Bingo payment - Treated as CASH by Capital One!

I have played on line bingo twice, on each occasion I paid just £10 with my Capital One credit card (I am not a gambler, just wanted to waste an hour). I was astounded to find that Capital One have treated my latest £10 inpaymnt as CASH! Not only that they have charged me a £3 cash advance fee plus they are charging me the cash advance interest rate until I pay on the ENTIRE credit card balance!

I have NEVER used my credit cards for cash and am really het up about this as I am paying 5% over the odds for months.

Capital One claim to have sent me a letter last July explaining this change of policy - I never received it. I cannot find this mentioned on their terms either.

Capital One will not step back but I have a manager ringing me at 11.00 tomorrow.

BE WARNED if you do any on line gambling!

    credit cards cannot be used in casinos or for any gambling transactions in any other places of gambling, however they may be used online for gambling the charges were brought in as a preventative measure to discourage people from getting into debt through gambling. you are responsible for keeping your address up to date and provided you have done so the notice of variation was sent to that address and perhaps through the fault of royal mail or even an oversight on your part you claim to have not recieved it. even so the bank has fullfilled their legal requirement to inform you of the change irrespective of whether you have recieved it or not they are not at fault. best thing to do is pay the charges and make sure you don't do it again.

    incase anyone isn't aware paypal transactions will now be treated as cash by some card providers.

    From their website...
    22. Definitions. In this agreement: ......‘cash withdrawal‘ means a withdrawal of cash made by you or any cardholder and also means any transaction made where you or any cardholder : ... carry out a transaction where payment is made to an establishment that is identifiable as carrying on gambling and the purpose of the transaction is payment for gambling activity;

    you dont honestly believe that is the reason do you?! ;)

    They were brought in as 1. It is a cash advance 2. Its another way for the bank to squeeze money out of the consumer

    Did you get you june/july statement last year? The paperwork advising of the change was in with one of those. But its also in the credit agreement as stated above, unfortunately you don't have a leg to stand on.
