Messed around about a 2nd line?

I've been Money Tipped!
I currently have internet with Sky which I am very happy with but the phone socket is in my bedroom which I again like but my flatmate wants his own so he can make calls whenever he wants and also download a lot.

At first I made an order with Sky for him for a 2nd line but he openreach engineer who came round insisted on just taking over the old line and mentioned that he had to use current cabling which doesnt make sense since we wanted a NEW line.

We cancelled the order with Sky anyway as noticed they dont do free 0845/0870 numbers of which my flatmate makes a lot. We ordered TalkTalk instead and same engineer arrived and told us the same thing, he would take over the old line!!!

Both times we ordered we went through the checker which showed a line already there but clicked no to taking over line and paid deposit for a new line.

I don't know what to do about complaining as don't think I will get anywhere.

If an existing line is physically in place and working then OR will use it. What possible objection can you have to that?
Regardless of which provider you go with, OR will be doing the install, so the answer will always be the same.
A 'new line' does not necessarily mean a new physical connection. The cost is the same for either.

I'm confused. If you are already using the 1st line then a 2nd line must be a new physical connection from the distribution point (pole/cabinet whatever). The majority of drop cables these days are only 2 core so can not support a 2nd line.

It sounds like OR are just wanting to put a second socket on the existing line - not what was asked for.

I read it as a second line already being physically in place but no longer in service -what the OP refers to as the 'the old line'.

If the problem is that the master socket is not in the location that the line will be used, then run an extension to the room (your friend's room). Plug nothing into the front of the master socket and your friend plugs his phone into his extension.

If the line is to be used for broadband, then don't connect the bell wire (terminal 3).

Alternatively, if you already have broadband, then a VoIP service with a geographic or 03 number may suit your friend's needs.

I think we are all guessing at the actual setup due to the ambiguity of the OPs original post.

We need clarification. has the house already got 2 lines? if so what is the problem with re-use of the unused one?
