Closing my first bank account

Just wondering, when I fill in application forms (credit cards, etc..) it usually asks for the bank and how long I've been with them

does it matter whether I've been with a bank 6+ years, or just 2? I don't want to have loads of bank accounts open, but should I leave this one with nothing going in/out? I mean they (HSBC) will probably close it anyway, right?

Edit: also, I have no direct debit accounts set up on my account, and no payments have been made on my card in the last week, but I'm just worried that there might be a charge I've overlooked? and someone will try and take money from the account at some point in the future and it will fail. any chance of this happening?
