Underfloor heating problem?

Hello everyone,

Quick question for any sparks out there. I'm having a new bathroom put in just now, with electric underfloor heating. The wires are under tiles.

Our builders put the sink pedestal and toilet in place today, and I noticed that the toilet is creeping well out into the area where the wires are running under the tiles.

I've read about objects sitting above UFH creating "thermal blocks" and causing the heating to fail.

Is this likely to happen in this situation? And should I be asking the builders to dig all my tiles and heating up again to fix it???

Any advice is welcome!

I should also add, the toilet and sink are getting installed tomorrow. So any advice tonight would be really helpful!

I think I'd be asking the builders to explain why they have installed the UFH under where the loo is going and to confirm that there will be no problem. That puts the onus squarely on them.

I don't understand why you seem to be proposing to do the washing up in the bathroom.

theres also an issue of fixing the pan down, Don't let them bore the tiles if the element is underneath it, w.c. will have to be stuck down with silicone or sim, not ideal but it does work as we have had the same prob with wet uf heating after the bathroom design was changed.

Are you sure about this? The heating wires are running horizontally across the front of the toilet seat so there is probably no more than an inch and a half of the toilet bowl over each wire. From what I've frantically been reading online tonight, thermal blocks aren't as big an issue under tiles, as they dissipate the heat.

And yes Keystone, my particular fetish is lugging the dirty dishes up stairs and washing them in the upstairs "sink".

I tried to post a Link to the Dream Warriors on Youtube, but as I'm a newbie it won't let me. I'm sure you're capable of Googlizing it yourself :rotfl:

I can't see a problem. The surface area of the pan is a very small area of about .5 to 1cm, in a partial ring, of ceramic, with a huge air space and water area above. So long as the wires don't lie beneath the fixing holes, I'd be happy with warm feet when I go.

Silicone is a no-no in my book for this job. Far too many jobs are bodged using silicone IMO. Lets face it as an installer if you can't secure it properly using the methods detailed in the MIs and you just silicone it, you're responsible when a large ar*e sits down, the pan breaks free, cracks and leaves said occupant needing 50 plus stiches. If you must stick it down use Sikaflex or similar.

In any case OPs later description of the layout renders such an approach unecessary as it ca be safely screwed down.
