Removing scratches from eye glasses?

Does anybody know a way of removing scratches from spectacle lenses without causing any damage to the lens or removing the "scratch proof"(lol) layer and anti-reflection coating?
I can't really afford to be paying for a new set of lenses. I've tried toothpaste to no avail.
Cheers

In order to remove the scratch you have to remove the glass around it. So, unfortunately, no, it isn't possible to leave the coating undamaged.0

You can get glasses for £5.00 or so from Lensway, Specky4eyes, Goggles4u etc.0

If the scratches aren't too deep, Brasso should smooth them down.
But, obviously, it would also remove the coating.....0 -
If the scratches aren't causing a problem then leave them alone. Sometimes you do get minute scratches on the coating especially as the spectacles age.
Sometimes you get scratches if you use a tissue to clean them instead of using a microfibre cloth so change the way you clean them to prevent scratches.0 -
Mcguire's do a product called PlastX, which is a funny polish for removing scratches in plastics, they quote uses as plastic windows, car lights, cd/dvd's and so on. I think it actually fills in as well as smoothing off. Might do the job... check it out.0

I second this.
Get another pair or two from one of those places, and keep your expensive pair when you really need them.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
