which is the easiest / best to maintain ?
seem to recall that with Avg you have to run a daily update on it .. it can't be done automatically ?
don't know of same with Avast .
As it's for my mums' machine .. need it to update automatically !!

Avira dosnt hassle with ads so might be a good choice0

Avast.
Avira does spam adverts.0 -
What about Microsoft Security Essentials, free as well, found it better than both of those?0

a bargain is only a bargain if you really need it!0 -
I believe that AVG is considered boated these days and from the reviews Ive read is well behind on virus detection rates. MSE and Avast both come out well, I run both on the Computers I have.0

As ive said many a time i use avast and its fine, it updates on its own and you even get an audible message to say its been updated.0

AVG 2912 Free updates are automatic - just need to go to tools/advanced settings/schedule and set it up for when you want it - if powered down it will automaatically check on th next boot.
Trouble with all these AVs it is difficult to get real life stats on how quick they are to pick up new malware - did a couple of virus total scans with variants of the system fix virus - AVG AVast were on the ball. but Avira didn't pick them up for another day.0 -
rob, this is why an advanced user should or will, on installation of avira, change the heuristics to High... one of the best behavioural engines about, and certainly best of the free ones
It's just a shame the default is set in the middle..I still don't get why
