Normally you are told they will hold your card for any spending during your stay (which arguably taking the hairdrier would include), to be honest I cannot ever remember going to a hotel that didnt.

Have you actually spoken to the hotel again to check what the £20 was for?

It depends what it said on your registration card when you checked in. Most of the big hotels have terms and conditions allowing them to charge you for some things - the big one for us when we worked in a hotel was a £50 charge for smoking in the rooms, which is what it cost us to hire in a air deodoriser powerful enough to remove the smell in the 3 hours we had to clean the room afterwards. We often had chargebacks and faxed off a copy of the reg card to the bank, all were settled in our favour.

Having said that, if it's a small hotel then they may not have this. The best thing to do would be to email them politely and say that you have already made arrangements to return the dryer, and if they don't refund the money you will ask for a chargeback. Chargebacks for small companies push up the cost of every card transaction, as they are priced on risk, so they should be keen to settle.

Chances are the owner never told the person who does the charging that he'd agreed you could return it next time.

if I were the hotel, I'd give you the £20 when you have given me the hairdryer.

Which is fine if that's what they agreed. But the owner agreed they could return it next time and didn't say anything about charging for it in the meantime.

Could be the £20 was nothing to do with the alleged hairdrier?
