Thanks for all of your help, everyone. I have been building a site with Weebly, it seems brilliant! However, we have a problem in that we now need our website to host a large database (ftp://ftp.tenset.co.uk//ba-dog-uk.pdf). I have spoken to Weebly about this and they seem to say that even their professional version couldn't do this. Can anyone recommend a host who could please?
Many thanks once again.0 -
To be honest, I think you would be better off actually speaking to a developer and getting professional advice. If you dont want to shell out for that (though most wouldnt charge if they think they are going to be pitching for the work) then you need to give a full description of what your site needs to be able to do etc so others can help.
The document you link to is for a desktop application. Are you trying to replicate some or all of its functionality online? Does it have referential data you are wanting to use on your site? If it does, do you have the developers or data owners permission to reuse their data? Or are you just wanting to display data you have entered into the system on your site somehow?
Once you get the database online, how are you going to extract the data from it to display?0 -

seems to what the op is on about.
Mysql database. The database/software probably needs to be installed by the tenset if they're going to stand over it and fix the bugs and give you updated versions.
Prices: http://www.tenset.co.uk/pedserve/tt_pedserve.html
Configuring it to your spec can be done by a third party, but this again will cost more money.
Any decent hosting provider does Linux and free mysql databases.
I'd recommend http://www.bigwetfish.co.uk
Start on the cheapest model (shared) and you can scale up to a dedicated server if the thing become "Digby".0 -
My own web host is simply amazing. I've been with them for 3 years now, run several sites from the basic shared package to 1 step away from dedicated, with instant 24/7 support and 99.9% guaranteed uptime, (which has been met every month).
They offer shared hosting with free domain name at £2.99 per month, or £1.75 per month if you sign up for 3 years. They are based in the UK, as are their servers. PM me if you want their details.Pants0 -
Whichever host you use (and in my experience over the last 12 years or so they are all as rubbish or good as each other all renting space from a few data centres) if you go with any of the big ones (123, 1&1, heart etc) then either make sure you go through cashback sites or get someone to recommend you so they get a referral fee.I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.0

I've used a company called NearlyFreeSpeech (cant post links - google them) that are pretty decent - got about 8 websites on it right now. They charge only for what you use - I've had very small sites that have cost me less than £5 a year to run as the bandwidth on a simple site is tiny. They offer all of the bells and whistles such as databases etc if you want that, but the price goes up by a few cents a day for those.
If you need to do anything beyond just the basic simple webpage though I'd recommend getting hold of a web developer/designer who can help you get the site uploaded and any database integration sorted.0 -

Or you could support British businesses rather than sending your money over to the US.....Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0 -

Looking to set up another website now but Weebly no longer let you use your own domain name for free, you have to upgrade. Does anyone know of a similar website provider/host that will still let you use your own domain without charging you for it?
Thanks everyone.0
