I've done them that way. I also just knock on the door and tell the neighbours the waters going off if I have to change the stopcock. No one has objected so far.0 -
Absolutely nothing wrong with Dafty's suggestion. The water will just flow gently over the edge of the tap body and into the basin/bath/sink
Ease the head gear out gently then if it spurts out you know this method isn't going to work as the stopcock isn't closed enough but if its just a gentle flow then you'll be fine - even without opening up other taps in the property.
Flushing the loo ain't going to help much though. Flow is seriously restricted by the partial closure of the stopcock and water will still get to the tap iun question.
