Dog has eaten leather car seats

Options
My dogs has pulled a huge chunk out of the back of my rear car seats

At the moment I've no idea how much the damage might cost to repair or what would be involved. Is this something that could be covered on my car insurance? If so, would it be worth me claiming with respect to increased premiums etc? The damage is only cosmetic (seatbelts and other safety bits are still intact).

I have seven year's no claims and am currently insured with Aviva, fully comprehensive with protected no claims. The car is a 2008 Nissan Qashqai, worth around £10K.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Keep an eye open on Ebay

It'll be cheaper in the long run, than making an insurance claim.

Even with protected NCB, your premium will go up because you made a claim and are therefore more likely to claim in future (i know its a con).

I'm pretty sure pet damage is specifically excluded from home contents cover, so I suspect that will be the same with car insurance.

Only sure way to find out is to read your policy schedule.

  • Thanks very much for your replies.

I've had a look through my car insurance documentation and I can't see any mention of dogs/pets/animals as an exclusion. However, I have a £350 excess and I've emailed a leather repair company for a quote. They estimated around £300 from a couple of photos so it looks like an insurance claim would be a no go anyway.

I also looked through my pet insurance policy, which covers accidental damage, however it doesn't cover items that belong to the owner. Oh well!
  • Bad luck, repair/replace the damage and then put a cage in the boot for the pest.

Dog's seem to have a particular fondness for leather. My son's Staffy likes to run off with boots and shoes and even tries it while they are being worn. Car seats will be an easy target if there's no-one about to fend off the dog.

I'm sorry, I have nothing useful to add to this thread, but thanks to the thread title I have this image of the dog from your avatar eating the entire car seat, leaving nothing but the slide rails, and you coming to your car to find it sitting there in the empty space wagging it's tail and looking really smug and pleased with itself.
