Hi all, as a complete technophobe I was hoping to pick your clever brains!
We are after a pc, either new or refurb to use as our main pc. Our old one is going in our daughter's bedroom for her to do her homework etc on.
We have been looking on Ebay etc but to be honest all the technical jargon just goes over my head!
All we really need is to be able to use it to browse the internet and for my daughter to play games on and a decent word processing type programme on it.
We really only want to pay about £60.00 (I kinow tightwads!) but can someone tell me what we should be looking for?
Any help greatly appreciated!

also what type of games are you looking at? (i am hoping just stuff like facebook games)Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
Preferably everything, but we could pick up the other items pretty cheaply.
Yes its just internet games that a 9 year old likes to play, like Moshi Monsters and dressing up games, that sort of thing!St. Francis said: “A man who uses his hands is a laborer. One who uses his hands and mind is a craftsman. He who uses his hands, and his mind, and his heart is an artist.”0 -
Check out the spec. of the one you just gave your daughter, and see if you can buy one very similar!
You will get very little for £60.0 -
ok so nothing overly demanding so hopfully do able
so basics for your price range you will be looking at
Processor - a intel pentium 4 or AMD Athlon, if possible stay away from celerons or semprons as these are budget processors
RAM - go for DDR2 ram if at all possible and you need at least 512mb of ram, if possible 1gb would be better
Hard drive - 40gb minimum - there will not be much in the 'speed' of these drives but the bigger it is the more stuff you can store! and really 40gb is about the minimum i would suggest for your operating system and some programs
operating system - XP is the most likely and probably the most usable for you, avoid vista.
as for office programs Libra office is free and perfectly usable, anti virus well once again plenty of good free ones so dont be sold on 'included office and anti virus software' as all they have done is install the free options which you can do yourselfDrop a brand challenge

There's some bargains to be had here:

I used the Compaq/HP Deskpro D530s as my main PCs in my last job. They were okay for running virtual machines of other OSes, so will be more than adequate for basic web-surfing, etc.
They're so cheap, I'm almost thinking of getting one myself... but I already have 5 computers (all to myself), and I'm struggling to think of any valid reason why I need another... Hmmmm...0
