Carpet fitters in Hull area, advise?

Just wondered what was the best way of sourcing a carpet fitter.

I realise getting several quotes would be a good idea, but should I call a few out of yellow pages, google or...?

I'm also planning on buying the carpets off eBay (have some samples already) do many fitters simply charge you for what they use on underlay/grippers or should I buy them myself as well?

My initial thoughts were roughly £50 per room, is this realistic?

living room - 4.5 x 5
dining - 3.3 x 4.5
1st bedroom - 4.5 x 5
2nd bedroom - 3.3 x 4.5
3rd bedroom - 3 x 4
hallway - not a clue

thanks for any help, I'm feeling a tad lost!

you could buy the underlay yourself and possibly the grippers. I'm doing it all myself to save the money as the fitting and underlay was going to cost more than the carpet itself. I've got underlay from these guys:
    www.wilsons-carpet-underlays.co.uk
I'm only putting underlay in 2 rooms but they beat the price on ebay and a box of grippers were quite cheap too. I got Cloud 9 Cumulus as it seemed to be recommended by many online and its quite thick for the concrete floors and stuff. Will probably take me a day to fit, but will save me several hundreds so will be worth it.

The fitter will only guarantee the actual fitting.
If the underlay fails and starts to vacuum through or the grippers laminate and split the fitter wont be interested.
They are some very nasty products getting shipped in at the moment, a good fitter will use a trade warehouse that guarantee the products it sells, an e.bay seller will be long gone.
I know this is a money saving forum so my advice is pay ONCE and get it done right.

On fitting grippers, if it has been done without knowing the thickness of the carpet, the fitter will rip it straight up.

    40-50 PER ROOM is ok
we paid 200 for our stairs and hall....pain to do and large.

You should get a discount if you do it all in a oner.
i had a fitter that was willing to do my hall for £100 however he went bankrupt ,probably cause he was too cheap lol

you will need grippers, door bars, underlay etc
make sure you get good quality underlay, its not expensive if you buy in bulk.(go for a brand, nice thick stuff)

btw try storey carpets , we purchased all our carpets from there, all end of roll dirt cheap. (unsure if it was a stock clearance, but the had loadsa end of roll)

Thanks for the link dawyldthing, their prices are the cheapest I've seen so I think I'll be ordering all the grippers, underlay and door bars from them tomorrow.

Definitely going for Cloud 9 Cumulus as I think it makes more difference to the feel than the carpet quality. Will also be trying to heed vax2002's advice and not skimp too much.

Justjohn I've just been to Storey carpets, they do have a good range, plus there's tonnes of carpet stores on that street. Will be doing a proper remnants hunt tomorrow afternoon. Must admit I was a bit wary of carpet stores as the couple I'd been in before just had ridiculous prices, now I see I was just looking in the wrong place :)

    Hi,

Is Cloud 9 Cumulus any better or the same as say, Tredaire Dreamwalk?

The specs don't seem to be too different but wondering if anyone has felt a noticeable difference underfoot.

Also, DAWLYDTHING, do you have any opinion about the Plushwalk underlay which is https://www.wilsons-carpet-underlays.co.uk own brand underlay?

Don't know if i have posted to late but Southcoates lane carpets in Hull do a complete job and very professional too. A local family run business and very competitive. I would definatly recomend them

i'm not sure about the plushwalk, just read through several reviews to find out what to go for (as i literally didn't have a clue) and chose the one that was recommended the most then tried to find the cheapest price. Wilsons were quick delivery and helpful, but just did it all online like most things as I can't be bothered with shopping
