But its still too high in my opinion with 18mm over existing boards . Strip out existing boards 25mm wpb direct to joists and go on that. 7 - 10 mm ish better off before you start.

More than agree with you Key - but as you well know the customer doesn't always want to go with the 'proper' solution.. as I said, to quote Tom Jones, It's not unusual.....

Yes it does........... but the carpet gripper obviously needs to be on the floorboards
No you're not. Use a length of standard carpet gripper parallel with the edge of the tiles and secure the carpet with that. Your transition doesn't need to be physically attached to that gripper. Use something like this:so I'm still stuck with the 24mm gap.
You don't have to have one that screws down, you can get the type that clip into the channel which you have screwed down.
