Crack in wood burning fire

Last year in November webought a multi fuel fire to replace our old electric one. We fitted the fireend of November; my OH has always lived in a house with a real fire so he wasreally keen on us having one. Yet here we are just under six months later andthe fire has a crack in it on the top plate. Have contacted the retailer whoaren't that communicative if I'm honest (I have to chase them, they don't ringback when they say they will etc.). Anyway yesterday they told me when I phonedthat the manufacturer had decided the fire had been over-fired, basically you haveto use it gently the first few times to temper it. We totally dispute this Iremember OH lecturing me at length whilst reading from the instructions as tothe does & don'ts (I’ve never had a real fire before .......to be honest Iwas happy to remain ignorant as to the intricacies of their working but heyho). Anyway OH doesn't do consumer rights etc. and wants me to handle it. Wetotally dispute over-firing and apart from the crack are really happy with thefire so want it replacing. To be honest that just sounds like a catchall excuseto fob customers off with, I mean how does one prove over firing as opposed todefective material? To that end how does one prove that it hasn't been over-fired?

Firstly is it reasonable toexpect a replacement as it's less than 6 months since we bought it?

Should I go to the expense of getting a report from a local contractor? And if I do can I claim that backfrom the retailer?

Basically if anyone has anysuggestions for how to approach this I'd be grateful. Thankfully I paid bycredit card so I suppose I can go that way to sort it out if I absolutely have to

Within the first 6 months it is up to the retailer to prove that it was NOT a manufacturing fault. You need to write them (recorded) a letter giving them 14 days to come and inspect it and repair, replace or refund. Otherwise you will seek legal advice etc etc.

You need to start creating a time line.

Are these things not bolted together? Can the top not be replaced?

Thanks for that, we bought the fire online from a company which is 40 miles away so I doubt they're going to want to come here to have a look. We've had a look into it and the tops do bolt on, OH says he would be happy enough with that. We really don't want to get into a situation where we have no fire. I'm still waiting for a callback which tey promised would be made on thursday. I guess next thing is drafting a rec del letter, am I unreasonable wanting a replacement or as OH says should I be content with a new top which he will fit? I first notified them by email at the beginning of may which was just before we'd had the fire 6 months.
