Medical driving assesments

Hello all,

So I have made a few posts in the past about this "situation". Basically last November, I self referred myself to my local medical driving assesment centre. The outcome was that I needed to drive a automatic with left foot acclerator. I already had my licence so phoned the DVLA who revoked my licence and issued me with a temporary one for retraining in said vehicle.

Anyway, my reassement was last Wednesday. Their intial concerns had gone (road position and excessive slowing down- the problems steming from my medical condition) but one stupid mistake at a roundabout (car coming very fast from the right- and examiner had to break) and they told me they would have to put this in their report.

Now they kept telling me this wasn't a driving test- I had passed a driving test and this was more an assesment to make sure I had cover the problems with the road position and speed.

I was just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situ- inital concerns met but worried that a mistake was going to cost them their driving licence??

Its horrible that I have got to wait and wait they said to give them upto 4 weeks to hear from them.

The assesment centre reckon the outcome will be DL back with the codes for adaptions, or that i will get more time for extra retraining but Im really, really, REALLY worried that it was the last time I ever get behind the wheel

I would love to hear peoples experiences- good or bad.

I'm afraid I can't help with the issue of actually completing some form of 'test'. I'm a whole right leg amputee, nothing left even down to the hip going. I've driven manuals and autos for over 20 years and had it been my left leg and not right leg life would've been much easier.

The main dealer where I decided to go and get my car recommended a driving instructor that had the left foot accelerator before they would commit to having the modification. I took a 1 hour lesson with him and he said I was very good at it and on telling the main dealer of this I got a set date a few days later to pick up the car and it's been great.

Driving a left foot accelerator and brake is totally wierd to begin with, even with 6 weeks under my belt now I am finding it challenging. I can and do do it but you really have to turn the music down and not lose that concentration. All it takes is a lot of parked cars and a momentary lapse of concentration and you've bumped it. :(

It is becoming more natural to drive left footed now and I would highly recommend trying to get an hour lesson off an instructor. Even after 6 weeks ir so (for me) I still feel a little odd using the left foot only but my driving is slowly getting there.

I can't help with the assessment but my husband is a right below knee amputee and he continued driving his manual car after his amputation using his prosthetic leg (the DVLA, insurance etc were informed). We've now got an automatic but it hasn't been adapted in any way, he still drives with his right prosthetic leg.
