storing &editing photo programme wanted

i use a hp programme on my main computer to store and print photos, but just wondered if there was something more suitable for a lap top.
the one i have on desktop was off the disc that came with the printer, and it's ok-it does what i need it to, so doesnt need to be anything too sophisticated. the only other requirement is that it's either free or very cheap.
thanks.
