Convert camcorder Video8 tape to DVD

I'm really having no luck at all with VirtualDub, and not seeming to like due to this.
I try to open disc 1 file and it Error's: "Invalid AVI File: LIST chunk <4bytes*.
I try to open the other files and it says:
“Couldn’t locate decompressor for format `H264` (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a videro for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."0 -
As I said, I've never used VirtualDub, but this codec might do the job;
