Venice- Inexpensive Restaurants

We are shortly going on a 4 day City break to Venice, this being our first visit to the city. We are are staying near the Vaperetto stop of San Zaccaria in a street called Campo San Marco (Hotel Fontana). We were wondering if anyone knew this area and whether they can recommend, from personal experience, a reasonably inexpensive restaurant to eat at in the evenings within a 20/25 walk from this area. hopefully somewhere a bit more authentic and not catering solely for the tourist trade. Any suggestion with directions etc. will gratefully received and appreciated.Thank you

    Lucky you, I love Venice:T

As long as you avoid St Marks Square and other costly tourist points then you will find plenty of reasonably priced restaurants in Venice. In fact nearly the whole of Venice is reachable in 25-30 minutes walking. Quite often you can walk down an alley and it will open up into a small square where you can find small restaurants/churches etc

Your best idea is to explore and find a restaurant that looks like you fancy eating there. Prices are displayed outside and usually includes a 'tourist' menu which can be good value.

Word of warning that a gondola ride is expensive, if you just want to say you have been on one take the one near to St Marks Square that just goes across the canal. The vaporetti(water bus) is reasonably priced and you can buy tickets for more than one journey.

I last went a two years ago, and went into a restaurant as I wanted a Spaghetti Carbonara but it could only be ordered for two. So I had a double portion:rotfl:

    Have a great time

I stayed at the fontana about five years ago. Its a good spot. :)

For restaurants and accepting a walk, i recommend via da rioba, there are a few there, osteria da rioba, names after the street, is pretty decent and typical food on a quiet road with seating out side by a quiet but used canale. Its a Walk, but a nice walk. You can always vaparetto to somewhere closer, but i like the walk myself, through more residential less touristy areas, including the fun of getting a bit lost and finding youself at beautiful dead ends. I guess a twenty five minute wlk...i habe mobilty problems sometimes and i guess this would be the quickest i would walk this in.

For the best squid ink pasta i have ever eaten i recommend the very busy And well known madonna restaurant, no more than ten minutes the other side of san maco from the fontana. I have never eaten there in the evenings but its a famous yet 'real' place, tourists and venetians both eat there.

Fwiw, try not to limit your walking times in Venice. Its those walks to find thing that show you the best sides of the place. Vaporetto is a must of course, especially for the smaller islands but take great walking shoes and get lost to find beautiful places.

Another thing to consider is to plan to eat on one of the islands one night. I quite like Le gatto nero on burano. Its a bit touristy and not too cheap, but its quiet compared to some of the places in bigger tourist draw places. I quite like the tourist tat on the small islands in a way i don't bavk in venice proper.

Venice is wonderful but tourist areas food is expensive, and not too good. The small supermarkets on the island offer better snack and lunch or supper fare imo, some bread, some cheese and italian charcuterie......

Thank you for your feedback. Does anybody have the actual name of any inexpensive restaurants away from the Tourist area in Venice being a 20/25 minute walk from the Hotel Fontana. Trattoria Alla Rivatta has been mentioned by another source does anyone know it? Thank you

If you want to spend a little more the Pumpkin was awesome - La Zucca - you have to book, but one table overhangs a little canal and is really beautiful
