I Thought Car Insurance Had Gone Up

Why am I getting lower quotes * this year with an at fault claim added ? The insurance world has gone mad(der) ;)

* Apart one company that want £10193.98  the next below being £1182 for a 2005 Focus. The majority are in the expected sub £200 bracket.

Generally speaking, your a year older, your car is a year older, you have a years more experience, possibly a years more NCD etc. In theory most peoples technical premium would go down each year were it not for inflation.

In reality if it goes down or not depends on a larger number of factors (the difference between being 21 and 22 is bigger than being 47 or 48 for example)

It is with the added at fault claim that is surprising me.

For most insurers a single fault accident is not going to be a major thing unless there was a significant PI claim associated and unless you are young, have convictions, drive a performance vehicle etc.

As rating engines get more powerful then the more insurers are looking at the compound/ composite effect of factors (ie looking at linked factors may have a greater effect than the some of their individual parts)

Generally, you find low risk or relatively low risk people are seeing little or no increase. High risk people have been seeing significant increases.

Plus, some people buy from providers that have high year one discounts. So, automatically they jump up in year 2. If you havent used one of those, then you wont suffer that rebound.

The op has said he's got new quotes, so he won't have been stung by the loyalty penalty.

Just got my renewal notice and 5% increase.

A change in the policy wording to take note of, DOC extension states other vehicle must carry a current insurance certificate.

Well all cars that arent under a SORN now must have a valid certificate of insurance.

The main reason for the clause however is to avoid people using DoC to get vehicles out of a police pound for having no insurance etc

What's wrong with the statement "This DoC clause is not valid to retrieve a vehicle that has been impounded by the Police or Government" to achieve that purpose?

If you needed to drive a car to an MoT station, you could get your mate to drive it there under DoC completely legally. Same with just moving it if you've just taxed it. Changing DoC like this is going to catch a lot of people out who think they're insured but they're not and it's only being done because the police believe DoC is a "loophole".

Rubbish, what is wrong with clarifying that any vehicle you are driving has its own valid insurance.
Your mate can drive your car legally for MOT only if your mates policy specifies he can drive other vehicles, which is by no means standard in all policies, and if your car has valid insurance.
  • I had one fault and one no fault, in a high-risk car and my insurance went down :) (well the renewal was sky high but they quickly dropped it).
