You might want to contact Trading Standards and take advice. It might be a one off, but it could indicate sourcing ingredients from a suspect source e.g. recycled material with inadequate checking. I do not need to point out the dangers. :o Homebase will probably apologise and might send you a truckload of compost to keep you sweet, and quiet!

Take pictures just in case Homebase try to fob you off, if they do you will need evidence when you get in touch with the press.

I suspect you are correct on the recycled material, I noticed on my Lidl compsot it now says to wear thick gloves when handling it, never used to when it was peat based

Nowadays seems peat free means "Watch out for glass and woody bits"

    Just a thought.

Was it a proper one with a needle on the end, or capable of taking a needle, or one of the syringes used by people for all kinds of legitimate things, like dosing chickens, greasing the brushcutter and mixing up sprays?

I ask, because although any object as 'foreign' as this is undesirable, the seriousness of finding one which can harm is clearly much more than discovering one which cannot.

Such a pain being environmentally friendly eh? Unfortunately foreign objects are par for the course assuming the compost is made from domestic green waste, there is only so far sifting can go, as annoying as it is, generally it is the public putting rubbish in with greenwaste that is the root of the problem.

    Any developments here?

    Any answer to my question?

I asked the type, because the medical variety of syringe is thin enough to be disposed of neatly by pushing it through the wrapping of a compost bag.

So far, I'm unconvinced that the responsibility lies with recycled material, or Homebase.

Although it's shocking to find the needle and obviously it could cause injury, all compost which is bagged is generally high temperature composted which would sterilise any infectious agents.

    Still worth contacting Homebase though.
