Short term cover for borrowed uninsured car?

Aren't we going round in circles? Sorn is for over 21 days, you surrender the tax disc for a refund, then buy a new one when you need it back on the road. If you declare sorn, then next day buy a new disc, they'll cancel that as well when they action the sorn letter a week later. So you'll lose the old one if you don't send it as well as the new one in all probability. ON line is for when you have the reminder, and don't want to re-tax, when the old one runs out.0

I haven't seen that anywhere.Sorn is for over 21 days
I've seen that under the continuous insurance stuff you need to be SORNed or uninsured, but you cannot get a refund on a tax disc before 21 days.
I was guessing you SORN and bin the tax disc.
Where does it say there is 21 days leeway? I don't think it's clear what you have to do for the short term.
If you have it on-line somewhere I'd be interested in case that situation arises again.
I did actually try calling the DVLA on this but got referred to recorded messags, the web site and then put in a queue.0 -
http://www.mib.org.uk/Motor+Insurance+Database/en/Continuous+Insurance+Enforcement/default.htmIt is an offence to keep a vehicle without insurance unless you have notified DVLA that your vehicle is being kept off the road by means of a Statutory off Road Notice (SORN).
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/Motorinsurance/DG_186696?CID=Continuous_Insurance&PLA=DM&CRE=FurlIf you're the registered keeper of a vehicle, it must be insured at all times.
The exceptions are:- if you have made a SORN for the vehicle
- if your vehicle has been kept off-road since before SORN came into force on 31 January 1998 – unless it was brought back into use
- if your vehicle is recorded as stolen, passed or sold to the motor trade or between registered keepers
- if your vehicle is recorded scrapped or permanently exported by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing (DVLA)
http://stayinsured.askmid.com/documents/CIE_CONSUMER_GUIDE.pdfIf you own a vehicle and it is registered in your name then it must be insured all the time.A vehicle can have no insurance if it:
• Has a valid SORN
• Was exempted from SORN (as
untaxed on or before 31/01/1998 and
has had no tax or SORN activity since)
• Is recorded as ‘stolen and not
recovered’ by the Police
• Is between keepers
• Is scrapped
• Is held in stock by an authorised
Motor dealer.
The last quote shows there is provision for "between keepers", but not for my "having difficult with insurance" situation.0 -
Used RAC short term insurance in the end. £45 for 3 day. Seemed the cheapest that I could get although all the others were similar.0
