Our oven has died a strange death....

We have a Neff double built-in oven. It's old - was here when we bought the house and is at least 7 years old.

Anyway, for a couple of months I noticed there were some burnt on bits in the bottom of the main fan oven. Finally got round to cleaning it at the weekend. Before I started, I looked closer and realised that the bits are in fact the oven lining which has disintegrated.

There is a large patch in the middle of the bottom of the oven where the lining has broken up into pieces which are all curled up. The pieces are sitting on a weird brown gloop. It's like an iceberg field. If I tap the oven lining elsewhere it feels hard - almost metallic. These pieces have gone all flexible though.

Has anyone had this before? Just curious as to what has happened to it. We've ordered a new oven.

I always thought ovens are metal boxes with no lining as such? It might just be my limited experience of ovens though.

Are you sure it is not just old food that has been very well burnt on the sides/bottom starting to peel away?

I thought that at first but it's definitely the inside of the oven itself. It's a relatively clean oven (aside from this mess) and you can follow the casing from the front inwards then you get to an edge. If you put your nails under it you can peel it up.

I know from looking at new ovens in the last couple of days that, at least nowadays they come with various linings. Catalytic lining is meant to be easier to clean. We've gone for a fairly cheap replacement which has an enamel lining.

I've no idea what lining our old oven has as we didn't put it in.
