Email problems

I hope I can explain this problem enough for someone to help me but I'm not to sure that I understand myself so here goes.....

I have a btinternet account as my main email address. I sometimes sign in from a computer at work or on my iPhone. I had a couple of emails go missing i.e. holiday confirmation. I asked for the email to be resent and still did not receive it. I checked my trash and it was not in there.

When I go on "Mail" on my mac book there is a junk folder which has lots of emails that don't show up on any other computer, The missing email was in there How is this possible?

If I didn't have the "mail" set up on my mac I would never see these emails and although most of them were actually junk the holiday one was important which makes me think that this could happen again. I don't know what happened to these email before I got my mac and so the "junk" folder

I know I could always access email through my mac but would still like the option for this junk folder to appear wherever I log in. Any ideas?

I hope this makes sense to someone smart

Thanks

Without knowing the mail client you use on your Mac I can't be much use has to the how but the why is most likely down to the settings on your Mac mail client.

It sounds like you're either unwittingly picking up those mails on your Mac before checking via other clients/methods or that your Mac is always on.

At a guess I'd say the Mac mail client was set to delete email from the server immediately leaving nothing for your other clients to collect (I'm not sure how the iPhone would deal with this if i'm honest although my iPhone and a customers iPad does this if the email is not forwarded to the device straight away).
If this was changed to delete after so many days then you should have a chance of seeing the email from another machine (using web client I assume?)

Of course most of this is based on assumptions, if you can provide a few more details, such as clients used, time the email was sent (after you left work/last checked via the PC client) then someone might be able to provide a more concise answer.

I don't have an Iphone or use btinternet so I cannot be specific, but the answer lies in the software you use to read your emails.
As you have said, the email has been marked as "junk" ( in my yahoo account, this is called spam ) and this happens incorrectly from time to time and in both directions. What I mean is, sometimes valid emails will be marked as spam and sometimes spam will be allowed through as valid mail. I cannot imagine that the software checking our emails for spam will ever be 100% accurate, so you need to be aware of this.

In my yahoo client on my android phone the spam folder is always shown along with the inbox and trashcan. Yours might be different or there may be an option to turn the spam filter on and off.
If I login to yahoo with a web browser from any PC and go to options, there is a section on how to deal with spam. One of the options is to automatically move spam from the inbox to the spam folder, which I have turned on.
Otherwise all the junk of the day would appear in my inbox and I would have to wade through it each time I checked my email.
Even so, I always glance down my spam folder before deleting it, just in case a valid email has found its way there.
As I said this does happen from time to time.

Check out you setting on your iphone app and when logged in to your email from a PC look for any options regarding spam. But always remember to check your spam folder for valid emails.

    Hope that helps a bit.

It is probably the mac mail program - rather than "if I didn't have the mac I would never see those mails", quite the opposite - it is what is automatically deleting them for you the moment they arrive. Turn it off, you will probably findyourself able to access a heap more spam on your phone!
  • Speculating a bit (I don't use BT Internet), I guess that your BT email is set up on both the iPhone and the Mac Book as "POP3" (you can check this on the mac book via mail > preferences > accounts and it will say Account Type: POP)

Assuming I'm correct, as you say, some e-mail is sorted into the "Junk" folder in Mac mail. This is done by the Mac Mail programme but would not make the mail invisible on the iPhone.

HOWEVER in "Mailbox Behaviors" you need to have "Never" set in the "Erase messages in the junk mailbox when:" otherwise they will get deleted on the Mac.

AND To make POP mail on the Mac play (reasonably) nicely with another device such as an iPhone untick "Remove copy of message from server after retrieving a message" otherwise eventually the message will not appear on your iPhone when you download it to your Mac.

More generally, POP mail isn't ideal for use on multiple devices. Others may have different suggestions but I find Googlemail (using IMAP) is the best to use on multiple devices.

If you want something that will work well on the Mac and iPhone together either Googlemail or Yahoo using IMAP will do the job. You can keep both your BT mail and a new provider in use on your Mac (and your iPhone). I have 5 email acounts on my Mac.

Not an unusual problem - agree that the issue is probably downloading into an email client system first which is configured to delete from the BT server once downloaded.

Easy solution, nominate one system to provide email client service (outlook, windows mail, apple mail, etc); and ensure all other systems just access the BTYahoo webmail service via your browsers.
