New vehicle delivery charges

On a small combi van I am looking at £580 plus VAT for delivery to the dealer and number plates. Given I suspect number plates cost £20 or so, around £560 plus VAT or a total of £672 or thereabouts seems way OTT for sticking it on a transporter and sending it to the dealer.
Anyone got experience of swerving this rip off or getting it substantially reduced ?

Not possible I'm afraid. Unusual colour required and particular spec.0 -
It always amazed me how much the charges are. It's probably the cost to ship it from the factory in Thailand though.0

£55 of that will be a vehicle registration fee, which the dealer must pay to the DVLA to aquire a registration number. The cost of the physical plates is probably built into this but we don't know that. Depending on where the vehicle is coming from, the delivery fee might not be that extortionate.
How to get around it? Negotiate. If you're prepared to take your business elsewhere, then it might be in the dealer's interest to absorb the fee.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. They tend not to be put on transporters anymore but are instead driven by platers...0 -

Wrong, the vast majority of vehicles will go from port of entry import centre to the selling dealer by transporter, plate deliveries are usually regd or bought vehicles drievn between dealerships or direct to customer.
Most of these come in at Portbury, where extras and model variants eg tints/alloys will be fitted.0 -
A couple of years ago I was after a new estate with a sunroof. There was a 3 month waiting list through the factory but I didn't particularly want to wait that long. The dealer checked on his database to see if anyone had ordered one and then cancelled. The computer said yes so I had that one the following day. They didn't charge me anything over and above for delivery, the only downside was that there was 110 miles on clock when I took delivery and I suppose that there was a possibility that the driver could have revved the genitalia off it but I have experienced no probs with it0

And you seriously believe there are tens of thousands of drivers waiting with plates to drive them away. Dream on.0 -

I didn't know BMW imported Combi vans, which is what the thread is about.:)
And by the way, a considerable number of BMW's come in at Southampton and are trunked up to Immingham distribution centre by road transporter.0
