i agree with littleemmie, we are also having our wedding in a village hall (26th may 2012!!!!) and it does work out a lot cheaper. Its much nicer as you do get to decorate it however you want, you dont have to pay expensive corkage fees and meals per head. We really didnt want the hotel setting as we feel its quite formal and officey. we were originally looking at one and we had decided we were going to completely transform it. then we couldnt agree with menus with hotel and wanted to supply our own drinks so decided to go with a pretty village hall set in its own grounds.
we have also bought loads cheap deco from ebay, have been buying drinks from s.markets when on offer, getting indian food from a restaurant, 10pp. its important to rope in a good a team of family n friends to help u set up and clear up tho. but we are paying a bit extra to hire company for dishes wash up and to hall for their cleaner.
We have the hall the night b4 so Im really excited and looking forward to setting up and seeing it all come together :-)0 -
Have to agree with it being cheaper.
Basically we had our reception booked at this really nice marquee venue, then things started to get ridiculously expensive, so we forfeitted our deposit and went for a village hall. We didn't book the on ein the village we're getting married in as it lacks charm, but we've found a lovely new village hall about 10 mins away that's £900 to hire. That includes tables and chairs - i'd say nearly all village halls will.
We're bringing in a caterer to do a BBQ and doing our own alcohol (most hotels charge for corkage remember).
Other disadvantages are that a lot of hotels make you have their DJ (we want a band).
Yes, there will be quite a lot of work the day before (and the day after!) to make it nice, but it's really cool being able to do it as you want it. Cost-wise there's tons you can do/get on ebay etc to make it cheap; it's also quite fun!0 -
My local village hall is only £330 to hire for Friday evening and all day Saturday and Sunday, which seems pretty decent - and it's in good condition so the decorations don't need to be too extreme to cover up the space like some halls I've looked at.
The only problem I've found is, a lot of them won't do weekdays! We're not technically planning anything yet, I just like to lookbut we want October 31st and next year that's a Thursday. A lot of halls have come back to me and said because they have clubs on, they only offer weekend bookings. So I might need to push the date back a couple of years to make it hit a Saturday!

our wedding is being held in the local village barn! The wedding budget like someone elses on this forum is 7000 but that includes everything - dresses, rings, suit, every little detail... What I love is that I can create so much personally ( i'm the bride despite the login name). Every month i create some decoration (bunting) or chutney. I'm making scones and fudge and cupcakes and freezing them. The party will be for 80 rising to 150 ish and we have outside caterers coming in to do the main posh barbeque including staff, cutlery, crockery and clear up. I have bought some eco cutlery and plates for the evening ( simple buffet of cheese, breads, cold meats and lots of cake) which can be thrown away. Glasses can be hired free from supermarkets and village hall has extra crockery. Not only is it cheaper than hotels, we are holding the party somewhere we love. The guests can relax and have fun with the fete games we are doing, and barn dance and 'disco' .We have the barn for a week beforehand so we can gradually set and then decorate with wild flowers and flowers from a local wholesalers... I can't wait! food and drink is def' the most expensive things but good quality (food) and quantity (drink) will never be cheap and i want this to be a really good shindig and i didn't want people who make the effort to attend the wedding paying out for their drinks.people can also camp so there is no fear of drink and driving. We aren't planning to have a celebration like this ever again so decided to push the boat out! but you could always charge people a nominal charge per drink to recoup some costs..?0

We're looking at a village hall because we can't find anywhere else that we *love* and who would cater for the small amount of people we have coming.
We've seen a village hall - fell in love with the outside.. I already know how i'll be doing the inside.. I haven't quite added it up yet0 -
Thank you for all your comments!!!
I do still like the village hall idea! I have found a pretty village hall about 30mins from us but unfortunately no field. Our budget is also 7,000 I think this is realist with a cheeper venue.
Just got to get saving and start researching into decor idea etc etc.
Thank you all for your tips it really really helps!!!
Thanks again!

We are having ours in the local new sea cadet building which has a lovely balcany that over looks a lake. We are having the downstairs for games (22 children attending) and the upstairs for eating and evening DJ. We are having a hog roast and spit chicken served to the tables (most expensive, but we want people to have plenty of choice, they also clear up and take all their rubbish home). We are buying a load of drink in, and having large drink dispensers with cocktails etc in.
We chose not to go for a formal setting as we want every one to be relaxed and just enjoy the party :-)0 -
On the inside of the hall we love its a little so-so.
We're thinking of having a indoor marquee (or drapes as my OH keeps correcting me). I don't think our guests will be expecting that0
