Cheapest meals round here are things I bung together from veggies left over from some other meal I've bought them for. To my mind that's like a free dinner. A delusion, I know, but it makes me happy and that's all that counts.

My Mother's cheapest meal was probably stovies made with the cheapest link sausages, usually two per person. When we were little it was considered a treat rather than end-of-the-week, empty-cupboard penury. She was a bit shrewd was our mam.

Put the corned beef in the fridge so it firms up. Then slice. Slice the potatos and onions. Get a dish, layer corned beef, potatoes, and onions and peas. Keep going till used up. Pour over some oxo gravy. Put in oven till potatos are soft (about 30-40 minutes)

Corned beef has become a luxury to us now that it is so expensive:eek: if I could get the kids to eat it though corned beef hash would be one of my favourite cheap meals, I love it!
