Anyone who says that we need to get people spending again to revive the economy is an idiot. We need to start start making things again.

I don't think you'll get many people on this sub-forum agreeing - unlike myself (engineering) I suspect many here are paid rampers or in the property business/have a vested interest.
I agree with you, however.0 -

If you are talking about making things that are overcharged to UK consumers (water, electricity, gas etc) who 'overconsume', you might have a point. If you are talking about making useful things that we can sell to other countries, I don't agree.

There is a burgeoning middle class emerging in places like China, India etc. These people have material aspirations to separate themselves from the masses in their own country, just as it happens here.
They could be just as fickle and brand-led as their Western counterpart, given half the chance.
We need to value our own heritage and brands to tap into this market though. Flogging off classic Marques like Jaguar; Land Rover; Mini; makes it look like everything can be flogged off in UK plc.0 -

I made the point that selling manufactured objects requires customer who are able to pay
I also noted that the UK is the 6th largest manufacturere in the world
I don't understand your point about water, electricity or gas as these aren't normally seen as manufactured products
I don't define 'useful' as things that foreign people buy although I am pleased if anyone buys british whether it is manufactured here, is an insurance or financial product, is an artisitic product or is an educational product or a computer game or a design or a holiday here or agricultural product or .........................0
