No Claims Discount Protection, whats the point of it?

My Girlfriend has 6 Years No Claims Discount (NCD) and paid for NCD protection with SAGA. She made her first claim in 8 years (which was her fault, damage to own car only, no 3rd party) and as expected the premium renewal rose

We shopped around and found eSure online at half the quote of SAGA but they will not allow her to protect the 6 Years NCD

With SAGA she can make 3 claims before the NCD expires, but as stated eSure wont allow her to protect the present 6 years NCD, so will have to start from scratch

So is this a loyalty thing where she has to stay with SAGA to keep the 6 years NCD, if so and at a higher premium, what's the point in protecting this No Claims Discount?

If they are refusing NCD protection, that does not mean they are rejecting the no claims discount.

Can you clarify what it is esure are refusing?

It's up to esure what they offer (within the law).
It's not obligatory for them to offer NCD protection.
Sometimes the cheapest policies are not always the best.

It isn't clear what you are saying here.
If the simply won't protect it, she still has 6 years NCD.
Can you clarify what's going on as it isn't clear.

    Hope this helps ..

Saga Insurance up for renewal in 2 weeks time
6 years with SAGA, No Claims, NCD protected (allowed 3 claims to keep the 6 years (60%) NCD)
Made claim for damage incurred to her car only, 4 months ago
Renewal quote came in by post today for £420

    So we shopped around online

    Online quote from ESure
Stated the accident claim whilst doing online quote
    Quoted £220
Will accept the 6 Years (60% NCD) (with proof) (No Problem so far)
Very happy with all then came to the last bit 'Protecting the NCD' (6 years carried over from SAGA), option greyed out saying "due to your circumstances (recent claim) we cannot offer NCD protection"

So is it that you cant carry over a protected NCD from SAGA to eSURE after making one claim?

Right, so esure will accept the 6 years NCD but will not offer the facility to protect it.

They are their terms. So, you need to decide if you want that or want a provider that will offer protected NCD. Esure are known to cherry pick.

    It's as I thought.
The cheaper company are not offering exactly the product you want.
They are at liberty to sell what they like and not sell what they don't like (within the law), so it's up to you whether you want a cheaper product that isn't ideal or a more expensive one that suits you needs.

Sorry I don't see the issue.
It's quite common (as with baked beans or any other product) that you can have a lower quality product for less money.

In that case ESure will be cheaper now (as they knock off 60%) but will hike it up next year as only 1 years NCD (10%)

    Right?

    Wrong.

If she doesn't make any claim she will have another year's NCD added at the end of the next policy year. (Assuming they go beyond 6 years). If they don't, she will still have 6 years at the end of the next year.

They are accepting her NCD as it is now, but (assuming you have told us the correct scenario) will not offer any "protection" should she make a claim. So if she has a claim during the year, her NCD at the next renewal will get reduced.

I never like ncd protection. For a true comparison, if you hadn't protected with SAGA, get another quote from esure, with a dummy name, close address, and a generic car, but true driving history. ie, one claim, and as you made a claim this year, you would be down to 3 years ncd from Saga's maximum of 6, as she had been driving 8 years, and you normally lose three years for one accident. So put in 3 years ncd, and the accident details. You'll probably find unprotected it'll still beat your renewal quote.
