Ppi recaim on a loan

Hi
Don't know if anyone can help or at least point me in the right direction, I also know that this is a bit of a flyer because it dates back to the early 1990s and I have little paperwork but they so upset me and left an indelable mark I just need to have a go!
The loan was for £10,000 via Trust House Forte Gold Card but was underwritten by Capital (Bank), my PPI was with Consoldated Financial Insurance again a GE Capital Company although does not seem to exist, I do have a letter from Consolidated Financial Insurance which contains the Policy Number.
Basically I was told that PPI would cover my payments if I was unable to work, I was asked no questions but was given the impression that loan approval was more likely if I took PPI. I was asked no questions about my employment history or given any limitations on the policy.
After 3/4 years I was made redundant but immediately gained a consultancy contract which was self-employed and dutifully continued to pay the payments, as soon as the consultancy ended I claimed on the insurance and was told it would not cover me!
They proceeded to hound me in a very aggressive manner with many hostile phone calls whilst driving to and from work and at work, the loan was eventually refinanced and in fact I paid it off before the original loan was due to be repaid but it still effected me and my credit rating.
I just need to know where to start, can't seem to be able to find Capital Insurance, if indeed they are the underwriters for Consolidated Financial Insurance or should I be writing to Capital Bank, can anyone help, any ideas and addresses, if I can be pointed in the right direction it is worth a punt if only to make me feel better.
Any help would really be appreciated

Due to the year this loan was taken out and you have no paperwork, then you may not be able to take this further, you need to contact whoever sold you the loan and not the insurer, it may be that they can find you but this is a very long shot.0
