Account needed - having problems

OH had an account with Lloyds TSB on which he was not aloowed (or in fact able) to go overdrawn, but thanks to them missing a direct debit, then taking it out when the funds weren't there - it went overdrawn. So they downgraded his account to a basic one, where he only has a cashcard for use at LLoyds TSB ATMs - which quite frankly is a pain.

Anyway, he tried to get an account with Barclays, but got knocked back. We got his credit file, sorted out a load of stuff, and he now has a score of 'fair', which was sufficient to get him a MBNA Credit Card 4 months ago.

Anyway, he's had the basic account now for about a year, and rather than upgrade with Lloyds TSB, he would rather go elsewhere (as they really are dreadful).

Does anyone have any info about banks which are more or less likely to give decent accounts - PLEASE.

Cheers, Luis.

To answer your question davidcampbell - Lloyds missed a DD payment, then resent it about 14 days later (when of course there was no cash in the account) which took him overdrawn.

We went into the branch and played hell, but they kept saying there was nothing they could do about it - even though we pointed out that it was their error which had taken the account overdrawn.

Even wrote a blistering letter to complaints - the reply to which was along the lines of 'if you don't like it, take your money elsewhere'. Unfortunatley, it is not that easy when your credit needs building back up after previous problems due to ex-wife etc.

Sooooooo, he was stuck with this naff basic account, needed to get wages paid into. And this is why we would rather get away from EVIL Llloyds TSB :rotfl:

Was the payment ifo Lloydstsb? ie a loan or insurance from them?
If not then it was not their fault. Direct debits are set up for companies to deduct funds from people's accounts directly.
You could of course be talking about a standing order whereby you tell the BANK to send money to someone else.
I still don't understand how LTSB could miss a payment? Why was the money not there to meet it if you knew it was going to be taken out?
There are always 2 sides to a story we have only heard 1 here.

OK it was a DD for the rent, it had only been set up 21 days prior to the due date, which they assured us would be fine - turned out it wasn't, but we didn't realise it hadn't gone til Landlord advised us rent not received. By which time, Lloyds had reissued the DD. Meanwhile, thought we had more money left than we thought, and as it was near the end of the month there was only £350 left in the account to service the £375 rent - hence overdrawn.

Hope this clarifies, and sorry you are sceptical.

Hi, you mentioned in your first post that ltsb downgraded your account. as far as i know they dont downgrade accounts just because you have went £25 over your limit. If this was your first time over your agreed facility then the bank should have let you off with the charge and perhaps arranged to increase your facility just in case it happened again.

You will find most banks operate the same system.

Thanks to all for their help and suggestions - I have passed them on to the OH - as stated before it is his account, so I am only working on second hand information. Thankfully, I have a great current a/c!

    Cheers,

    Luis.
