Having a problem with computer freezing every time I try to open any application after favourite (not) son messed with something (says he doesn't know what he's done!!). Internet seems to be O.K. Tried Dr Watson diagnosis: Windows KB891711 component has altered Windows systems files. Module name KB891711.EXE
I am not at all computer literate and would appreciate any advice (words of one syllable, please). I don't understand what the above means at all! Would like to prevent husband from killing son if at all possible...........

If you're using Windows XP then you can always try recovering it using your CD.
An example of how to do this can be found:

Should be possible to prevent, even though not that easy
This link contains some background info http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS05-002.mspx
The problem should be fixed by removing this file from startup. Which version of Windows have you got?0 -
Sorry SomeOne ( again
), posted before I saw your post.

Don't apologise for either of those times!
Your advice for this post is probably more useful, my solution wasn't to try and find the problem, it was just a general fix for it.
But as you mentioned above, it would be better if we knew which version of windows amghiggs uses.

KB891711.EXE is a security patch from Microsoft- you should see it listed in add/remove programs probably under "hotfixes,"
It would be best to let it run if it doesn't cause any problems.0 -
sorry- should have said - we have Windows98. So if KB891711.EXE is a security patch, why would it be causing problems? (Excuse me if that is a silly question, as I said I really don't know much about these things). Thanks for the replies so far, by the way
