British gas help

I'm British gas customer dual fuel since may 2009. I have been sending in my meter reading even their little man has read the meter and as far as I knew everything was fine. Just had a shocking letter of them saying they have made a mistake with my bills, the computer that accepts the meter reading was for some unknown not been accepting my reading so I owe them £900. Now I know I have to pay this amount but not in two months like they ask because my husband is disabled and I'm his carer so we don't work, but what I am questioning is they have worked out my bill to be nearly £3000 for electric for the three years we have Been with them. All electric switches are switched of at night only telly on during the day, we do live in a four bedroom house but everyone out during the day except me and husband. All bulbs are the new cost efficient ones and all electric goods, tumble dryer not used heating and hot water is on gas we pay £54 a month for this separately, is this a normal about £3000 for a year before this I was on a key meter

You should verify that the readings you took and hopefully noted down and sent them are what they are dealing with. They may have used the wrong readings and sent you a bill in error.

no my reading are right from myself and their own meter readers, but unfortunately the computer that does the bills thought the reading was wrong. They even have it on record that Feb 25 11 one of the British gas rang me up for a meter reading which I gave him but he laughed at me and said I was reading it wrong and that he would sort it out with a right reading silly me thought he knew better.
  • Hi, what type of electric meter do you have, dial ( 6 rotating dials ) a digital or a standard type of mechanical meter. Plenty of meter readers make mistakes as do the householders

its just a normal meter I have been told, its the one with 6 numbers.
been on the phone again if I want the meter checked it will cost me £68.00 so I have been forced to back down and I have to pay what they say I owe thanks

What do they actually mean by the readings not being used? Where you getting billed to estimates and they were just too low hence this catch up?

Are they rebilling you 3 years due to all this? If so, we need to know a bit more about the cause here because the back billing code may apply to anything older than 12 months if ut was their mistake and you didn't hinder or ignore the situation intentionally.

how they have explained it to me is the meter I have is not the meter that they thought I had, I was informed by by that edf put the meter in when I changed from a key meter to go to direct debit (which I thought that was done by them when I switched to them but they informed yesterday it was not them but edf my old electric company) they said edf informed them that I had a different meter in which only had five numbers so when I was given my reading to them the computer was knocking of the first number after the 0 for example 004523 it would not except the 4. They except and have apologized it is their fault because I have been sending in my reading and the little man that reads the meter been sending theirs in so they are now going to pay £1400 of the bill I have to pay £904. I guess I was just shocked yesterday with the bill thanks for reading and giving any help

But if the computer wouldn't accept your readings, then they must have billed you on estimated readings!
Which is it-it's clearly show on your bills if estimated ('E' after the reading, or 'C' for customer reading)?

some were customer reading one estimate and some from their meter reading but of course trying to look online this morning my account can't be viewed so perhaps they are looking at it again.

Op can you post actual reads that are showing as billed from your online account. I would consider backbilling requested if over 1 year rebill.
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
