Making a compost bin ...

My twin boys have finally outgrown thier bunk beds, and as they are made of thick, heavy duty pine - and rather than burn the wood - i thought id make a compost bin (as a family of 5+ we generate a lot of kitchen/garden waste) and also a cold frame for my seedlings.

I just wondered about the compost bin - im just making a square box with a lid put directly onto the soil. my question is do i need to do anything to insulate the box? i remember seeing one of the episodes of 'its not easy being green' and they had a piece of carpet on the top of one of theirs ... will a wooden lid be sufficient?

managing to use old screws and nails too, so very MSE!!

thanks for any advice
