Cancelled Credit Cards Still Exist??

HI All

I applied for Natwest card and got one but got a low limit (considering salary). The Customer Services rep asked me if i had any existing credit cards and i don't. Then i mentioned that when i called Barclaycard for a new card they told me my card was still on the system but "deactivated" and would i like it reactivated.

Does anyone know if this is normal practice? If so i must have six or seven ghost cards sitting out there. Worrying thing was i didn't even get asked any security questions before being told my card still existed and the limit it used to have on it.

Is there any way i can get the companies to completely cancel the accounts out? I find it very disconcerting that they are all sitting out there on databases, surely that is in some way not right?

I am most concerned that this is affecting my credit limit.

Ask that they are closed, rather than just being left dormant.

Although they will remain sitting on databases obviously, so as to retain the history. Some lenders have the ability to resurrect closed accounts in any case.

You'll see on your credit reports which ones are open and which are closed.
