Family Rooms For 4 People At Holiday Inn Exress = 2 Beds?

Am I wrong in thinking that it is unacceptable for a hotel to offer Family rooms for 2 Adults & 2 Children (under 16) but only provide 2 beds?

I arrived at Holiday inn Express Hemel Hempstead this weekend to discover to my horror that there Family Rooms only had two beds (one double & 1 double sofa bed). As every hotel in the area was fully booked, we used part of the sofa and got extra bedding to make a third 'bed' and was put in interconnecting rooms the next night with 1 doublke and 2 single beds.

In our party was myself & my partner, our 12 year old daughter and our 5 year old niece. If we had taken our 5 year old niece and her 8 year old brother, I could have possibly accepted the double bed for them to share but a few weeks ago, we took our 8 year old nephew with our 12 year old daughter. We would have found it totally unacceptable for us to expect them to share a bed (luckily though we stayed at a Days Inn Hotel).

They state on their web site that you get a double and a sofa bed? I can't see what the problem is with two children sharing a bed for a night is? They obviously don't sleep naked and they are only CHILDREN?

No -it's normal. Most American hotels are set up this way and Holiday Inn are an American chain. There just needs to be bed space for the number of people-so 4 people =2 double beds. The more expensive chains like Marriott will usually provide a rollaway on request (often at extra cost) but the budget chains like HI Express have smaller rooms and fire regulations usually make this impossible.

Premier Inn and TravelLodge's family rooms are the same a Double bed and a double sofa bed. The solution some families use if not wanting their kids to share is to have a parent and child in each bed.

Perhaps if this is so horrific to your sensibilities you should check the room types instead of assuming -and if need be book and pay for interconnecting rooms instead.

to be honest, yes, I think you're wrong in your expectations. Every family room I've stayed in in the UK and in France has 2 double beds as standard (unless the particular hotel has clearly advertised that their standard family rooms have a different configuration ie one double and one set of bunks, or one double and 2 singles). But yes, most have been 2 double beds as standard, for a family room.

perfectly normal and i dont see any problem.

If you don't want kids to share - and i see no problem with same sex siblings or friends sharing...

then one adult and child in one bed and another adult and child in the other bed...

what was wrong with a 12 year old female and a 5 year old female sharing a bed?

but as others have said - perhaps if you require everyone to have their own bed its best to book 2 rooms.

I have to admit I prefer separate beds for my children, but only because they keep each other awake, so we usually end up with 1 child in each bed and 1 adult in each bed. But its always been perfectly clear when booking that that is what I am going to get, so I can't complain. Travelodge do a single bed and pull out bed which is an alternative to consider next time you book.

Family rooms in the Holiday Inn, Premier Inn and Travelodge that we have stayed in had a double bed and sofa bed that either converted to a double or you had a pull out matress at the bottom of the sofa for one child and the other slept on the sofa. When we stayed in the mexican themed hotel in Disney Land, Paris it had two double beds for a family of four. Similar when we stayed in hotels in Canada and the USA.

Thanks for the comments , I now know not to book a Premier Inn or a Holiday Inn Express room for 4 people.

To address some of the other comments, Both children were also adamant that that they wanted their own bed, it was not just me or my partner.

We have also stayed at over 20 differnt Travelodges in the UK and all have had a double bed & double sofa bed which split in to two single 'beds'. We have also stayed at a Days Inn Hotel, Holiday Inn and another 'local' hotel which have all provided seprarate beds for chldren, so was I wrong to assume the Holiday Inn Express would?

i have stayed in lots of travelodge's and they aways have a double and a sofa that converts into a single and a pull out single under the sofa. ( i often sleep on the pullout one because i am short and that matress is often the best in the room !!!).
Anyway i have also stayed in a few travel inns and premier inns and these have always been two doubles.
So i guess the answer is if you want a double and two singles, book travelodge.
