If you get a gas fire, you'll need to have a window open for ventilation (either that or suffocate) - which sort of negates having the heater in the first place. Cheaper alternatives are to shut curtains at night, wrap up warm, keep doors closed and find and seal up any draughts.

As above, because the system will have a thermostat, it should never be running flat out, except when it is the deepest darkest winter - the rest of the time it should be cutting in and out automatically based on the demand of the thermostat. What they say about reducing the temp by 1oC and saving lots really is true.

For many energy bills are rapidly overtaking their council tax bills as a significant monthly cost, whereas not too long ago it was a fairly small bill. Get used to it!

Hi IC. Thanks for your post- very good point about the gas fire, I'll not bother to get one!

I'm really worrying because of the cost of our heating system. Having it on for 8 hours (on a saturday for example) will cost us about £12! I'ts crazy! Makes the council tax look cheap!

No, it won't, because it won't be drawing power all the time the timer is on. Once up to temp it will cut out, and only cycle on and off if the temp drops. To maintain a room temp of 18C at this time of year will use very little power.
It would only cost you £1.50 per hour if it was on all the time for each hour.

    Hi Macman,

I over egged it there then!! I've worked it out again based on the 22 units used over 3 hours and it would cost 98p an hour.

That still seems expensive to me- for a two bed flat? What do you think?

Then in the winter it must be more like the £1.50ph mark?

    Thanks,

    Amie

You are basing your costs on 22Kwh costing £2.94p. That is a cost of 13.36p per kWh,

That is a very high cost for Tier 2 electricity(you can ignore the high priced Tier 1 units or daily standing charge.)

There are plenty of Tariffs around 10p/kWh

No, because even in winter it won't run all the time.
Any form of non E7 electric heating is relatively expensive, you must have realised that when you purchased/rented the property?

    Hi all,

Were currently going through the complaints procedure with our provider as we have had a huge bill from them and the meter isnt registering any of the off peak units (every unit is being charged at 13p). I'm working in maximum figures so that I can work out the very highest our bill would be. The figure they have charged us is still miles off! See my post 'huge electricity bill' for the full picture (if youve got an hour or so to spare!!)

But why are you on E7 with this kind of heating system? E7 is designed for storage heaters and hot water heating with an immersion heater.
All the heating provided by the boiler is being charged at a premium rate, unless you run it at night.

You need to read the other thread as there is a lot of detail and errors with the wiring and previous incorrect billing prior to Amie moving in.

Its likely to be yet another mistake by this landlord...
