I always use it, if it lights up I check it with the meter. It's very rare but I have personally been to a couple of jobs over the years where everything has been mains live....both from faulty washing machines actually!
One wonders how such circs could have persisted without the occupiers being made aware i.e by giving themselves a shock..Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -

God knows, I can only guess the paint was an insulator to the touch and a possible bit of plastic pipe. Not too sure how long the fault exsisted before my visit either......bloody stung though!0 -

Could anyone tell me how a gas meter could end up with live current passing through it, and would there be enough current to kill anyone touching it. His Voltstick can detect from 50 volts ac to 600volts ac.
Are householders in danger from this sort of thing as 4 out of a 1000 seems very dangerous.
Its certainly got me a bit worried reading them all day but then I dont have to touch the meters
I have found a number of metallic structures which show live on my toy and have felt confident enough to touch same and not felt a thing or come to any danger. The device is clearly unreliable.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). A gas meter reader and battery changer is not qualified to test mains leakage, so any advice or action based upon his testing is poop.
A silly device that test for induction, dangerous in the wrong handsHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Agreed and did you know ,i am reliably informed that if installation show live (i.e lolly stick lights) then certain workers for some companies are told to turn off electric, issue warning notice to customer and even advise evacuation/call the electric distribution company !Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). That is quite right because the symptoms probably indicate faulty or missing main equipotential bonding.
As an aside, a "mains testing device" to prove "dead" needs to be tested immediately before (and after) use. Are the employers issuing proving devices? Thought not.0 -

If i find any more live potted plants, I shall issue a warning notice. The problem is,who do you call? United Utilities or Charlie Dimmock..?Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry).
