Question About Comping Mags

Hope its ok to post here?

I was briefly talking to someone I met online who enters competitions, and is very successful and was pointed in the direction of Compers News. com and The London Competitors Club.

I wondered what others thoughts were on these and if they are worth joining?

Kind regards

Why pay for competitions when there are so many on here?

I've subscribed to Compers News for ten years and naturally I'll say it's worth it - however I'm biased as since last Summer I've worked for them as a columnist! I find it invaluable for information on text, on-pack and unusual competitions.

There's currently an offer on to get three issues for just £1 by Direct Debit so you could always give it a try and see what you think!

Didnt think you were supposed to advertise on here?

Isn't that self promotion then ? I'm guessing the majority of comps that these mags hold would be available to find on the web somewhere for absolutely no cost whatsoever.

At least I was honest about the fact that I write for the magazine - I'm just helping out with an answer to a question that nobody else has responded to, with an offer that should appeal to those of you who like a bargain (and that's what everyone is on MSE for after all!) - feel free to ask for my post to be deleted!

But I don't think £1 is much to pay to see what it's like - and then at least you can answer questions about it having seen what the mag has to offer.

But shouldn't you really know better than to be posting links on here to promote your own business ,what with you working for a comping company and having very expressive views about what is right and wrong in the comping world,I understand that you say you are trying to help but I am sure with your experience you knew only too well that self promotion on here is against the rules.

  • I don't post regularly here at all, just when trying to help out or if there's a discussion about my blog that I feel I should contribute to. I'm not au fait with the rules - yes, I know I should be - and didn't even realise until today that a blogger can't ask a comper to post a link to a competition here. I clearly have a lot to learn, so have deleted my post and will now go and read the rules....

I don't think you offended anybody ,I personally just didn't think it was right that you were posting links to comping mags that charge people money, on a site that holds thousands of comps that are free to access for anybody,I'm sure the work you do with your blog etc is invaluable to a lot of people and long may you continue doing it.
