Just returned from new York with the wife. Upon going we were made aware of our baggage allowance of 23kg or 50lbs each. Due to length of time we were staying we normally only pack one suitcase and was weighted at approx 61lbs. Arrived at Manchester airport and no issues with weight as we both had our allowance in one case, well upon our return to uk suitcase weight was 68lbs due to a few additions like a few presents

Was charged $150 for excessive weight explained to staff at checkin that we had no issues at departing airport, but could not understand that the total weigh for us both was well under and saving space in hold of plane by just having one case, going to dispute this with us airways to request refund as nothing is stated in baggage allowance policy that we can't place 2 passengers luggage in one case :mad:

States quite clearly that you will be charged $150 for an oversize bag in economy (23-32kg is oversize). I think you were lucky to get away with it on the outward leg. AFAIK this or similar policies apply with most airlines..ie 23kg max weight bag for free in economy

US Airways website clearly states that each passenger's allowance is one free checked bag.
It also states what constitutes an overweight bag and the relevant charges.
The weight allowance is per bag, not per passenger.

Overweight checked bags
+ $150 each
For bags that weigh 51-70 lbs/23-32 kg in Economy
(no overweight charge if you’re booked in Envoy for first 2 bags)

+ $175 each
For bags that weigh 71-100 lbs/33-45 kg

You can place 2 passengers luggage in one case, but nowhere does it state that doing this would entitle you to take a bag that is heavier than the weight allowance per bag.

Yes, but I think the point the OP missed (and maybe wasn't clear in my post) is that the FOC weight allowance is per bag, (not per passenger). Each passenger has a FOC allowance of one bag.

Both links show the same info, I just posted one to US Airways website to show that the same info is available from more than one source

That would have been a good idea, or take 2 cases to start with although of course its easy to be wise after the event but following the OP logic of pooling allowance they could have had one case weighing 46kg :eek:

And imagine if the allowance had been an upper class/premium of 2 x 23kg each

You would have needed a forklift to shift one case weighing 92kg..:rotfl:

and does a bag weighing double actually save that much space over two? (Just being picky)

Right, case was not oversized as stated in a previous post


We did not buy a case at the airport because we thought we had no issue with the weight as it was ok at Manchester via US airways staff at that point and we knew we had not contributed that much to the returning weight

We could not buy a new case as there were no facilities unless we checked in first and even then there were no shops with cases

Was fully aware of weight restrictions prior to travel I had a large bag in my car but upon initial checking they told me it was fine for the 2 passengers, anyway had response and telephone from US airways who are not helpful at all. Even though I explained situation with regard to Manchester and their failing to abide by their own policy but no joy.
