Wedding advice (of the mortgage type!)

My wife and I have recently married and are in the process of contacting all of the relevant companies to update our details.

We are also in the process of applying to remortgage the house and have been told by the broker that there should be no problem getting the new mortgage in the Mr and Mrs name even though all of her documents will be in her maiden name (address will be the same though as we have been living together and the existing mortgage is a joint one).

However, she would like to keep her maiden name for work. The people in the payroll / personnel department have said that this is not a problem but it is either one or the other. That is, all her payslips will remain in her maiden name if she chooses to keep it on the other company computer systems.

My concern though, is that come a few years down the line when we want to re mortgage again, apply for any sort of credit or accounts, the companies will ask to see the last few months payslips and bank statements and we will be in a position where the payslips won't match the bank statements (there are no addresses on the payslips just name).

Are companies happy to keep accepting a marriage certificate even say ten years down the line to prove who we are, or is this more common than I think? Also I don't want to have to buy a batch of original certificates to cover the ones lost over the years by companies we have had to send them to.

(I know that this is not really a mortgage question but I thought that a mortgage advisor may be able to answer and re mortgageing is the only real time I can see this problem occuring - not many people want to see payslips now)

Thanks for any advice.

    John,

You do tend to find that lenders are only willing to accept documents in maiden name in conjunction with a marriage certificate for about 6 months after the marriage, by then they expect you to have everything updated.

I'm not suggesting that the issue you raise would be insurmountable, but it would certainly be a problem with some lenders.

I had to get a sworn statement from a solicitior for one client to confirm that Ms E ABC was also Mrs E ABC_DEF, and she used different forms for personal and work - you may need to do that in future. I presume passports etc will be in the married name, so I suspect it won't be an issue and the employer can simply confirm that it is the same person.

Could she not change her name on payroll and all other systems at work but be "known as" her previous surname, I know several people do that in my place of work....

    Thankyou all for the advice.

Sammy, unfortunatly as she is a police officer in a big force, the computer systems are relied upon to find people for email etc and if she was known as A, someone who tried to look for her on the system would not know to look for B which would be her real name (could have its up sides I guess! very few complaints would make it through - not that she gets them of course :) )

As for the sworn statements etc, whilst I see that it could quite easily be done, I don't really want the extra problems that may come with it and slow things down with applications. One of the things we are looking into for the not so distant future is a bit of small scale property development, so will want to be able to quickly open mortgages with the least fuss possible.

I guess she will just have to be Mrs me at work too!

I've had lenders accept marriage certificates years after the marriage in this situation, so it will not stop you getting a mortgage, but yes it may well slow it down or possibly restrict your choice of lenders.
