Working Tax Credit Account Balance and Information

Hello everyone,
Having recently sent off a working tax credit claim I have received a letter asking for details such as P60, Contract of Employment, Bank Statements, etc. I've also been given a form to fill out which asks for my income and expenditure and some other information.
The form is also asking for my bank details (account number, sort code, etc) and balance, including any savings accounts. Which I don't have a problem giving as I have nothing to hide but I find it a little odd they are asking for this information, has anyone else been asked for this?

HMRC have historically had a huge problem with overpayments due to error and fraud mainly because they operated a pay first check later approach.
This has changed in the last couple of years and they are checking many claims up front now and confirming the details before they go into payment. It is called a pre-award check and is perfectly legitimate.
Are you self-employed?
Obviously HMRC are doing this for their own reasons, but it is helpful for claimants too if done properly and quickly as it can cut down on errors and overpayments.

Thanks for the reply.
Also I'm not self-employed - and thanks for the clarification, I'll send the details off.0 -
When you say the form asks for 'income and expenditure' can you clarify what expenditure they are asking for?

Sure, they are asking for:
Mortgage/Rent/Board (I guess whichever is applicable)
Gas/Electric
Water
TV
Council Tax
Motoring (Insurance,Tax, etc)
Food
Phone/Mobile0
