Slow email speed

At my work there are about six different computers with email addresses thus: user1@domain.co.uk. etc. Emails can currently take anything up to 36 hours to arrive. We are with BT Broadband and also have addresses thus: user1@btconnect.com etc. Emails sent using these email addresses are very much faster when tested internally (minutes instead of hours). Our domain host blames BT for the delay when using the domain addresses. Is this likely to be the case or are we being fobbed off. If it is indeed BT to blame can anyone suggest a remedy or recommend a more reliable (but cheap) ISP.
