Took my Christmas Cake out of the oven yesterday. Halloween is a great time to start Christmas baking
Anyway enough of that. I've just discovered a few jars of sweet mince left over since last year. Would it still be safe to use?

I'm assuming by sweet mince you mean mincemeat as for using in mince pies. If that's the case then it'll be fine to use. It's a preserve just like jam.0 -
I loathe cooking/baking, but bit the bullet and did my Yule puds yesterday; we don't bother with a cake, there's only the two of us, so it'd be kicking around for ages.
Re the mincemeat - I've had two-year old mincemeat before now, and it's been fine; mind you, I do make my own, (did that yesterday, too). I don't know if you're talking HM or shop-bought? But in any case, one-year-old should be perfectly alright. If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
We're having a wartime christmas this year so I'll be making carrot cookies, oatmeal macaroons, a wartime christmas cake and pudding along with some mince pies made with a mincemeat based on grated apple. We're having a nice brisket joint for christmas day cooked in the slow cooker overnight (makes the house smell wonderful) along with all the trimmings and we'll have lots left over for cold cuts and bubble and squeak with homemade pickles for boxing day lunch. Love this time of year and all the cooking involved too!0

just put a batch of cranberry and cinnamon rolls into the freezer. Am well chuffed. Took me two goes to get a batch good enough! Ah well. Stopped me from spending.
Also decanted the damson and sloe gins into bottles. Homemade mincemeat is done. Made it a bit too boozy, sure no one will complain!
I just need those sprouts and some fresh veg....Love it0 -

Can i ask why a wartime christmas?0 -
It's the first year of a grandchild and one DD will be starting her own christmas traditions. They will visit us before christmas so the remaining 3 of us felt like 'playing' as we've an interest in the Home Front and how people managed on rations and in hard times. I've quite an extensive collection of recipe books from that period so we thought we'd see how christmas was for my parents. I've made many things from the recipe books and I'm constantly surprised at how nice they are despite only having limited amounts and ranges of foods to choose from during the war. We're not going to be hungry I think or bored with the meals we make and we're limiting presents to one practical thing each and a stocking each hopefully with as much homemade or rescued in it as possible. Should be fun, should be interesting. It's certainly in keeping with Austerity Britain isn't it? Lyn xxx.0

Is there such a thing as too boozy mincemeat? My mince pies have to be served with a warning for anyone driving!Over futile odds
And laughed at by the gods
And now the final frame
Love is a losing game0 -
