Getting gas. What supplier?

Ninth Anniversary First Post Combo Breaker
I moved into my housing association a year ago and it had a prepaid electricity meter with Scottish Power. I just stayed with it. It also has electric storage heaters. I was told I would not be connected to the gas supply or get gas central heating until April 2013.
Last week I got a letter saying that my street would be getting connected to the mains this week. I was also told to arrange my own gas meter for the heating going in sometime in the Summer. So I am in Scotland and I have a prepaid electricity meter with Scottish Power and I am confused as to who I should contact about the gas? Tried some comparison websites but you really need to have gas already to get anything.

No you don't, just put in any Standard tariff to produce the comparative results-that's the data you are interested in (not your 'existing' tariff).

Quick tip also, when calling tell them you need a new connection contract. you will also need the mpr from the GT
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

It usually makes sense to have both gas and electricity from the same supplier since they will offer you better rates for that. You are not obligated to stay with Scottish Power. Also you would get a better deal if you were able to switch to a tariff with a monthly direct debit, if that is possible for you.

With the storage heaters, I would hope that you are on Economy 7 right now, but if you switch to gas heating then that might no longer be the best deal. Economy 7 only makes sense if you use the majority of your electricity during the night hours.

So the local distributor is fitting gas pipes for the street. You still have to approach them for your own supply to be jointed off it. This will cost money to do as its a new connection, they will give you a MPRN which is the registration number or your meter point and you contact the supplier you wish o register you and get the meter fitted.

...but what about your internal changes such as GCH and rewiring of your elec to remove the heating? This would also mean changing your elec meter so you can pay standard instead of E7 (unless you have an E7 allowed in industry data to operate as standard or E7).

Are the HA fitting the gas and GCH? If so, what about the elec rewiring? If they are doing this you only need to get the MPRN, contact a supplier for gas registration and meter fitting, then sort your elec meter out.
