What nut is this?
There are so many trees in my neighbourhood at the moment that are dropping the nuts in the photo. I think they're either an acorn or a hazelnut...probably an acorn, but I'm more familiar with the more common larger elongated lighter brown acorn. My question is are these particular nuts edible? There are so many just dropping of the trees I'd love to find a use for them...but I don't want to make myself ill or worse:eek:.

Are you in the UK Hulda? Hazel and sweet chestnuts are normally gathered much later in the year.0

No I'm in New Zealand -we're directly opposite season-wise. It's currently very late autumn here, and hazelnuts and chestnuts are dropping. I'm pretty sure these are acorns though...thinking of the leaves, they look like the leaves in this photo, which are oak.:
I also, against all common-sense, tasted a bit of nut, and they were bitter, which seems to be usual for acorns due to the tannin. What threw me out is that the commonest oak here has longer, bigger, lighter coloured acorns. Thanks for the help:)
Edited: I'm sorry for the huge photo, I can't seem to resize it any smaller.0
